CAMERON SCHMITZ STUDIO WORKSHOPS!
Cameron Schmitz Fine Art
Greenfield, Massachusetts
When I teach painting, I'm reminded how essential it is for students to get my one-on-one attention and to have the opportunity to teach in small group settings where an intimate, supportive, and nurturing environment for learning is so effective for each person's own journey of painting and art-making.
Beginning in August 2023 I will be launching a new series of small-group oil painting workshops at my Professional Art Studio located in Greenfield, MA! Studio Workshops will be limited to 3-4 students per workshop, providing ample one-on-one time to support to each participant as well as access to my professional studio of pigments, brushes and tools.

PAST WORKSHOPS
ABSTRACTION FOR BEGINNERS
This painting workshop is for anyone wanting to explore non-representational painting and who is new to painting abstractly and/or oil painting. We will be focusing on the use of color, expressive brushwork and mark-making techniques. This class provides a supportive environment for students wishing to learn different approaches to abstract painting and working in oil. This workshop will include painting demonstrations, visual examples and slide presentations, one-on-one instruction and handouts that include topics and concepts discussed.
OIL PAINTING TECHNIQUES
FOR ABSTRACT AND REPRESENTATIONAL PAINTERS
Using a combination of brushes, palette knives, rags, oil sticks, and a host of materials, in this course we will experiment with both traditional and less conventional oil painting techniques, to achieve a variety of effects. In order to achieve these results, we will also work on a variety of painting supports. This is an excellent course for both representational and abstract painters who are looking to experiment with different techniques in a supportive and non-judgemental environment, to attain exciting results in their painting. This class will be tailored for both beginner and experienced painters.
EXPRESSIVE FIGURE PAINTING
Working from a model, students will explore the expressiveness of line, color, shadow and the science of light. We will investigate how to create luminous skin tones through the use of both of indirect and direct painting methods, using limited warm and cool color palettes. Individual instruction will be augmented by demonstrations, discussions, and slide presentations that feature examples of work from artists past and present, focusing on issues of personal expression, composition, color and technique.
INTUITIVE ABSTRACT PAINTING: CREATIVE MARK-MAKING
The way that paint is applied and expressed is an integral part of one’s visual language, inherently impacting how a work of art is seen, felt, and interpreted. In this workshop, explore an intuitive approach to oil painting and mark making while investigating different elements of drawing, brushwork, and surface quality within a painting. Consider and experiment with the processes that generate exciting, authentic and unique works of art. The workshop will include looking at images of various contemporary art works, painting and drawing demos, one-on-one instruction, and ample painting time. Appropriate for beginners and experienced oil painters.
ABSTRACT PAINTING: WORKING IN A SERIES
In this intensive painting workshop, we will explore the process of painting in a series in order to move quickly into developing exciting visual ideas while working intuitively and finding ways to challenge ourselves in beneficial and productive ways. Working in a series provides the opportunity to gain a rhythm and momentum within our painting. As a result, we are able to more effectively develop visual concepts and ideas while achieving multiple images that are harmonious. By working small, students will be able to build a small body of work and will be supported in exploring new imagery while developing their own unique voice within the mode of abstraction.
IMMEDIACY IN OIL
This oil painting workshop will help painters of all levels learn to paint with increased confidence by better understanding the workings of color, value relationships, and building forms in space. Working from a choice of still-life set-ups or photographs of landscapes students will learn to compose paintings with increased immediacy and boldness through the use of drawing, value studies and a limited palette. Workshop will include painting demonstrations, visual examples and slide presentations, one-on-one instruction and handouts that include topics and concepts discussed.
INTUITIVE ABSTRACTION: One-Day Painting Workshop
This oil painting workshop is excellent for anyone wanting to explore the exciting results of an intuitive approach to abstract painting. In this 1-Day workshop, we will focus on the use of color, expressive brushwork and various mark-making techniques, while taking artistic risks in order to find one's own unique voice. This workshop provides a supportive environment for painters both beginning and advanced who wish to take creative risks and experience it’s exciting results. One-on-one instruction will be provided to each student, supplemented by a painting demonstration, slide show, and adequate painting time for exploration. Appropriate for both beginning and advanced students.
